چکیده

A distinction in vowel quantity is typically realized acoustically by vowel duration. Research on the perception of Swedish vowel quantity by adult native speakers supports this. It further suggests that when the duration of a vowel is relatively long (due, e.g., to inherent duration), listeners may also make use of vowel spectra to distinguish vowel quantities. The current project investigates the perceptual cues used to distinguish vowel quantities in late stages of language development. Of particular interest is whether pre-adult listeners use spectral cues to identify the quantity of vowels which have a relatively long inherent duration. Results are compared with the findings for Swedish adults and discussed in terms of the perceptual role of vowel duration and spectra as cues for vowel quantity.

Vowel Duration and Spectra as Perceptual Cues to Vowel Quantity: a Comparison of Japanese and Swedish

A distinction in vowel quantity is typically realized acoustically by vowel duration. Research on the perception of Swedish vowel quantity supports this and further suggests that when the duration of a vowel is relatively long (due, e.g., to inherent duration), vowel quantity may not be adequately cued by duration alone and may also make use of the vowel spectra to distinguish vowel quantities....

Perception of Japanese quantity by Swedish speaking learners: A preliminary analysis

Swedish learners’ perception of Japanese quantity was investigated by means of an identification task. Swedish informants performed similarly to native Japanese listeners in short/long identification of both vowel and consonant. The Swedish and Japanese listeners reacted similarly both to the durational variation and to the F0 change despite the different use of F0 fall in relation with quantit...

Cross-language speech perception: Swedish, English, and Spanish speakers' perception of front rounded vowels

Cross-language research on adult speech perception demonstrates a strong effect of linguistic experience on consonant perception but not on vowel perception. Our paper re-examines the effect of linguistic experience on adults’ vowel perception. First, identification and goodness functions for the high front quadrant of the vowel space were mapped for speakers of Swedish, English, and Spanish. S...

Perceived Swedish vowel quantity: effects of postvocalic consonant duration

In the production of Swedish, vowel quantity is known to be realized in the vowel, but also affects duration of a postvocalic consonant. The goal of this study is to examine the use of postvocalic consonant duration as a perceptual cue to vowel quantity. Listeners ́ responses and reaction times were recorded for synthesized materials in which the vowel spectra and duration were kept constant and...
